What is Fortress Rosecrans?

Fortress Rosecrans is a National Historic Landmark that is a Tennessee landmark.

Fortress Rosecrans was built in 1862 by Union forces as a supply depot for the Union Army during the Civil War. It also served as headquarters for the Union Army of the Cumberland, and it was one of the last fortifications to be surrendered to Confederate forces in April 1865.

The site is now operated by The Friends of Fortress Rosecrans and is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. .On October 12, 1864, General George H. Thomas ordered the construction of a breastwork or entrenchment on an island in the middle of San Diego Bay to protect his troops from Southern gunfire. Fortress Rosecrans Murfreesboro Tennessee's History

Fort Rosecrans was built in 1862 as a Union fortification to defend Murfreesboro, Tennessee. It is the only Union fortification still standing in Tennessee. The fort was named for General Stephen W. Rosecrans, who led the Union Army of the Cumberland during the American Civil War and served as a major general in the Union Army during the Indian Wars.

The site of Fort Rosecrans was originally occupied by a Confederate infantry division under General Braxton Bragg that had been ordered to block passage of the Union Army into Middle Tennessee from Kentucky. The Confederates were defeated at Stones River on December 31, 1862 and retreated from Murfreesboro on January 2, 1863.

Fort Rosecrans is now open to visitors and is managed by a nonprofit organization called Friends. Learn more
